Biographical Info

Michael Fedyshyn is principal trumpet of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he has held since 2007. He joined the Philharmonic as 2nd trumpet, and prior to that was Principal Trumpet of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. Outside of the Philharmonic, Michael can be heard regularly in concerts with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Canadian Opera Company. He is also a regular member of the Group of 27, a chamber orchestra based in Toronto, and a member of the Canadian National Brass Project, a large brass ensemble made up of brass players from orchestras across the country. Other notable performances include concerts with the Montreal and Winnipeg Symphonies, The Mariinsky Orchestra, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, and Les Violons Du Roy, as well as ScotiaFest, the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival and the Canadian Brass.

As soloist he has performed with the Toronto Sinfonietta, 13 Strings of Ottawa, G27, Silverthorn Symphonic Winds, and the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and most recently for the “Friends of Alec Wilder” concert series in New York City. Some recent recordings include the Juno Award-nominated Palej: The Poet and the War (2013) with G27, Brahms on Brass (2011) with the Canadian Brass, Shostakovich: Symphony No. 7 “Leningrad” (2010) with the TSO, and Owen Pallett’s Heartland (2009).

A committed teacher, Michael has given clinics and provided coaching in a variety of settings: for students of the RCM Glenn Gould School, University of Ottawa, York University, ScotiaFest, Ottawa Youth Orchestra, and Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and acts as Brass Mentor for the National Academy Orchestra of the Brott Music Festival. He is currently an Instructor in Trumpet at Mohawk College, and Brass Coach of the Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.

Michael is a Bach (Conn-Selmer) artist and plays Bach Bb and C trumpets and cornets, and the Conn Vintage One Flugelhorn.
